Minnesota Biennial: 2D II

Description

The Minnesota Biennial: 2D II is the third in a series of juried exhibitions organized by the Minnesota Museum of American Art that features recent work by contemporary Minnesota artists. The Minnesota Biennial series alternates between exhibitions of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.

Jurors

Elizabeth Dunbar is Curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Dunbar’s exhibitions at the Kemper have included projects with Amy Cutler, Naomi Fisher, Judith Schaechter, Garry Winogrand, and Teresa Hubbard/ Alexander Birchler, among other solo and group exhibitions.  She is currently working on a major traveling exhibition of the work of Los Angeles painter Gajin Fujita, as well as on projects with New York photographer Nikki S. Lee and New York sculptor Ryan Humphrey.  Prior to joining the Kemper, Dunbar was Chief Curator at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University where she organized Not So Cute & Cuddly: Dolls and Stuffed Toys in Contemporary Art and The Transformative Vision in Contemporary Video, as well as solo shows of artists Jean Shin, Dario Robleto, Peter Sarkisian, Nic Nicosia, and Miles Coolidge, among others. She holds graduate degrees in art history and museum studies from the City University of New York.

Theresa Downing is the Associate Curator at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. She joined the MMAA in 2004, where she recently curated interact/react, a group exhibition of interactive sculpture and installation, and Summer Escape: Traversing the Collection. Downing came to MMAA from the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis where she curated several exhibitions including The Artist & War and Take Me to a Picture Show!, and co-curated the permanent collection reinstallation for the Weisman's 10th anniversary in 2003.  She also directed the national touring exhibitions and related catalogues for Alfred Maurer: The First American Modern and Charles Biederman from the Weisman’s collection. Downing holds degrees in German and design from the University of Kansas where she studied conceptual fiber art.

Awards

The Minnesota Museum of American Art will purchase one or more works of art from each Minnesota Biennial for the permanent collection. Purchase awards will be made at the discretion of the Museum.

The Minnesota Museum of American Art does not participate in the sale of artwork. We will facilitate purchase inquiries by forwarding the interested person’s name directly to the artist.
