Our Mission

Minnesota Museum of American Art showcases art of the past and present, unleashes the creative potential of our community, and inspires the artist in us all.

Current Goals

Having vacated our space in the Ramsey County Governmnet Center on Kellogg Boulevard in downtown St. Paul in early 2009, the museum is working to reestablish its programming and presence through temporary exhibitions throughout the metro and state, with even some national shows on the schedule for 2012 and beyond.

Staff time is being spent organizing exhibitions, educational programs and events, taking care of the collection, and rebuilding our donor base through grants and active fundraising. Our fiscal year 2011 (which closed on June 30) ended with a firm balanced budget, an indication of the museum’s commitment to sound fiscal practices in these challenging economic times.

We are actively looking for a new home in St. Paul, a permanent home from which the museum can one day operate a full slate of programs, art classes, and exhibitions. It must allow, at the very least, space for galleries, classrooms, storage, administrative offices, shop, and café. We would like to build enough support from state, civic, corporate, and private sources to begin a capital campaign in 2012. Our goal is to open a new, dynamic, permanent Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul by late 2015.

Where We Are Now

Minnesota Museum of American Art has no permanent galleries at the present time, but our collection can be seen in "on the road" exhibitions throughout the state. Visit our Exhibitions page for current programming.

Our permanent collection is devoted to American art from the 19th century to the present, with special emphasis on paintings of School of the Eight, mid-century studio craft, modern drawings, and artists from Minnesota and the region. This fine collection of approximately 3,800 works of art is well kept and securely stored in an offsite location.
