Our Treasures:
Our Treasures features works that highlight the American landscape, people, and major developments in American art of the 20th century. It includes landscapes, portraits, and abstractions by such noted artists as Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Paul Manship, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, George Morrison, and Warren MacKenzie, among others. Regional themes such as the Native American experience and our Midwest roots and heritage will be featured in this exhibition.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a 84-page, full-color catalog, with essays on each work in the exhibition, authored by a variety of distinguished art historians both in Minnesota and throughout the country. It also includes an essay about the history of the development of the MMAA collection. Online interactive features will be available inside the exhibition and visitors to the exhibition will also be able to pick up a fun “scavenger hunt” brochure geared towards families and kids.
“During this time of transition in the life of the MMAA,” says executive director Kristin Makholm, “our great collection is the institution’s standard bearer, the life blood that connects the rich history and legacy of St. Paul’s art museum to audiences of the present. It is a valued yet underappreciated resource that deserves to be known and appreciated by people across the state, and we’re eager to get it on the road.” This statewide touring exhibition brings the best of this remarkable collection to new audiences throughout the state.
