"Portraits you can dance to" by Maria Elena

The Minnesota Museum of American Art's "Only Human: Exploring Contemporary Portraits" exhibit will be accompanied tonight by a variety of artists of different stripes who will explore the potential of the portrait -- in audio.

The unconventional exhibit stretches the definition of "portrait," with photographs of moving-van rejects in vacated apartments, raw photos of Mexican extreme fighters and a dyptich of a hedge, a man named Hedges and his contemporary twin.

Tonight, St. Paul artist Jay Wittenberg will pair his oil-on-canvas portrait of Louisa May Alcott with a reading from her journals. Other visual artists will share the anecdotes behind their portraits. But not all of the audio portraits will be linked to visual art in the exhibit: Actor and singer T. Mychael Rambo will perform a theatrical monologue to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.; Minneapolis slam poet Lisa Arnold will perform a few short self-portrait poems.

In all, nearly a dozen dramatic, musical and literary artists will work their own media in homage to the portrait.

What: 7-9 p.m., Friday
